De-escalation is always the goal if you’re going into a confrontation. Obviously the executive protection mission is to mitigate, avoid and/or evacuate, nonetheless there are plenty of circumstances where you will need to interact with persons of interest. Sometimes you’re proactively seeking them out because they are exhibiting suspicious activity, other times they might be inbound while you are static with your client.
In any case your approach to these encounters will make all the difference in the outcome of them. Lead with respect, never let your guard down but give the person moral high ground. Remember if you can meet their needs psychologically you can release some of the stress and pressure inside their mind which will ensure that the interaction goes more smoothly.
Obviously if someone is posing a physical threat, the protocols are very different.
