Busting rust, running, and gunning. Shooting competitions teach you how to think while running your firearm. Non-standard problem-solving while throwing lead down the range. This is where you can implement the tactics you learned at your cool guy class, and add speed and intensity if you want. 

But I think the largest takeaway for me is always being able to solve higher-quality equations than just simply aiming and shooting while utilizing my weapon. While the other guy is thinking about aiming, you want to be thinking about movement, angles, backdrop, and overall intensity. When you play these games you can turn the battlefield into a chess match while everyone else is just playing checkers.
